Ethnic Rhinoplasty
When considering undergoing plastic surgery procedures, many people still wish to maintain their unique features and beauty while correcting their aesthetic concerns, especially in regards to preserving ethnic identity. Just as no two people are alike, different races and ethnicities each have defining facial characteristics that distinguish them from others. But until recent years, traditional plastic surgery techniques for procedures such as rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery, were tailored exclusively to westernized bone and facial structures.
With so many variations in facial appearance and structure across different ethnicities, specialized surgical techniques must be used to deliver the stunning results you want. Dr. Paulo A. Escobar of Escobar MD Facial Plastic Surgery has extensive experience and training in rhinoplasty procedures in patients of all racial backgrounds. If you are interested in ethnic rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Paulo A. Escobar will tailor his surgical approach to you to ensure you get the results you want while embracing your diversity.
What is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty surgery works towards the same goals as traditional rhinoplasty; however, differences in facial structures between people of races such as African, Asian, Native American and Hispanic descent require specialized techniques that take these differences of facial structure into account. Each ethnicity not only has different bone structures but also differences in skin texture and thickness. Likewise, every culture has a different perception of what is considered aesthetically-pleasing, so these factors need to be taken into account as well in an ethnic rhinoplasty procedure.
Ethnic nose reshaping uses many of the same techniques as traditional rhinoplasty but must also be tailored to the distinct bone structures that characterize people of different ethnicities. As a specialist in ethnic rhinoplasty, Dr. Paulo A. Escobar takes the patient’s desired results into account while also balancing the nose harmoniously with the natural features of your face.
Who is
a candidate for Ethnic Rhinoplasty?
Similar to those considering traditional rhinoplasty, patients who are unhappy with one or more features of their nose and feel that their nose detracts from their overall attractiveness are likely good candidates for ethnic rhinoplasty surgery. While specific nasal features such as a flat bridge or a dorsal hump may characterize specific ethnicities, the result of nose reshaping procedures works to enhance your natural features so that they blend seamlessly with your existing beauty. Other common concerns that can be addressed with ethnic rhinoplasty include:
- A wide nose base
- A drooping nasal tip
- A retracted columella, or the area of the nose located between the nostrils
- Large or disproportionate nostrils
- A wide or flat nasal bridge
- Structural defects
- Nose asymmetry or crookedness
The best way to determine your candidacy for ethnic rhinoplasty is to schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Paulo A. Escobar. A meeting with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon such as Dr. Paulo A. Escobar offers an ideal opportunity to discuss the changes you’d like to see as well as go over all available options for accomplishing your goals.
How is Ethnic Rhinoplasty Performed?
Individual races can have nasal characteristics that pose an issue for inexperienced surgeons or surgeons who only have experience with patients of European descent.
Individual races can have nasal characteristics that pose an issue for inexperienced surgeons or surgeons who only have experience with patients of European descent. For example, patients with darker complexions often have thicker skin that is more likely to scar or become discolored as it heals, so it is imperative to have a plastic surgeon who understands differences such as these perform your procedure. Dr. Paulo A. Escobar has the level of training and experience required to take these factors into account both during the planning stages of your procedure and for producing the outcomes you expect.
Ethnic rhinoplasty surgery is similar to traditional rhinoplasty surgery in many ways. The procedure can be performed under general anesthesia, depending on your needs. Dr. Paulo A. Escobar recommends general anesthesia for your safety and a smoother recovery process. Once the anesthesia has been administered, different techniques will be performed based on your goals as well as your ethnicity. Similar to traditional rhinoplasty, Dr. Paulo A. Escobar limits his incisions to the internal structure of the nose, also known as closed rhinoplasty, to make the necessary changes and avoid any external scarring. Once the required changes are made, incisions will be closed, and your recovery process will begin.
Dr. Paulo A. Escobar has even developed his own specialized technique for ethnic rhinoplasty known as the Combined Auricular Graft that has been published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ).
After your Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Any rhinoplasty procedure will require some downtime for you to recover. Still, thanks to Dr. Paulo A. Escobar’s minimally-invasive closed rhinoplasty techniques, your recovery should be relatively quick compared to open rhinoplasty procedures. While you will likely experience minor discomfort, bruising and swelling after your procedure, a majority of these symptoms will dissipate after a few days to a week of recovery. Pain medications will be prescribed to help you manage all residual side effects.
Many patients will feel comfortable returning to work and their routine tasks after a week of downtime, though any activities that raise your heart rate should be avoided until Dr. Paulo A. Escobar advises it is safe to do so. Dr. Paulo A. Escobar will work with you to schedule several follow-up appointments post-op to ensure that your recovery process is on track and you achieve the best possible outcome from your surgery.
Your Ethnic Rhinoplasty Results
As with traditional rhinoplasty procedures, the results of your ethnic rhinoplasty will take between 9 to 18 months to develop. However, once your nose has fully finished healing, you can enjoy the benefits of your new nasal contours for a lifetime. Because of Dr. Paulo A. Escobar’s artistry, experience and attention to detail, patients of all ethnicities and backgrounds can restore their nasal symmetry, shape and position that enhances their overall appearance and restores their self-confidence.
